DISCIPLINE POLICY

We believe that in order for children to thrive, they need guidance and boundaries.  Boundaries help children learn what is considered as acceptable and unacceptable behavior.

The term Discipline derives from the word Disciple.  For our purpose, the definition means to teach or to train self-control and behavior viewed as acceptable within one’s society or culture.  Discipline therefore is quite different from the term Punishment-- the definition to penalize one for misbehavior or misconduct.

Our first goal to guiding behavior at Kid’s Campus is to look first at our own method of discipline.  Teachers often must put aside things going on in their own personal world in order to be at their best when dealing with the children.  Our teachers will look to conscious discipline to understand how, as leaders, we can do better.

Secondly, we will look at developmental factors.  Many children experience developmental stages in which behavior changes from what it once was.  A child gaining independence may be more apt to dig in their heels and say, “No”!  This behavior can be guided through discipline by offering choices, rather than an edict, such as; “… you will do it because I told you so”.  This behavior is normal and expected.  As teachers we anticipate and work to guide these normal impulses to a more acceptable response without stifling the development of the child.

Third, we will look to causation.  Why is a child behaving a certain way?  Does it happen at a certain time of the day, during a certain type of activity, are there changes occurring in the home, are they tired, sick or hungry.  We must first understand why the behavior is occurring before we can guide it to a more acceptable form.

Time-out will only be used as a last resort.  Time-out will not be treated as a punitive form of discipline.  Rather, it will be treated as a break to regain self-control.
